OnlyFans glossary: the terms that come up in every agency call

Updated

This glossary explains 58 terms around OnlyFans, fan chat, marketing, agency contracts and safety, each in one sentence that can stand on its own. It is written for creators who want to understand an agency's offer before they sign anything. Where a guide goes deeper, it is linked. Numbers appear here only where they are sourced.

Key takeaways

  • PPV is content fans buy one piece at a time, usually in chat, on top of their subscription.
  • A chatter writes to fans in your name, which is why your boundaries belong in writing.
  • Changing the subscription price on a live page costs rebills, because existing fans have to accept the new price first.
  • The email address on the account decides who controls it if there is ever a dispute.
  • Setup fees, exit fees and long minimum terms are the clauses to look for before any signature.

The five terms to know first

If you only learn five terms, learn these. They decide what you earn and what you sign.

  1. PPV

PPV is content a fan buys one piece at a time, usually as a locked message in chat, on top of the subscription.

  2. Chatter

A chatter is a person who writes to a creator's fans in her name and sells content in chat.

  3. Revenue share

The revenue share is the percentage of revenue an agency receives for its work.

  4. Rebill

A rebill is the automatic renewal of a subscription, where a fan pays again for the next period.

  5. Account ownership

Account ownership means who controls an OnlyFans account if there is a dispute, and that comes down mainly to the email address on it.

On the platform

SubscriptionSub
A subscription is the recurring price a fan pays to see the posts on an OnlyFans page.
It is the entry ticket, not the whole business: single purchases in chat come on top.
See also: Subscription price, Rebill, PPV
Subscription priceSub price
The subscription price is the amount a creator sets for monthly access to her page.
On a live page it is a delicate setting: when it changes, existing subscribers have to accept the new price, and many never do. More revenue per fan is better found in chat and PPV.
See also: Rebill, Auto-renew, Subscription bundleGuide on this: What should you charge for an OnlyFans subscription? Why a low price usually earns more
RebillRenewal
A rebill is the automatic renewal of a subscription, where a fan pays again for the next period.
Rebills are predictable revenue. Changing the subscription price switches them off for existing fans until they accept the new price.
See also: Auto-renew, Subscription price, Retention
Auto-renew
Auto-renew is a fan's setting that renews the subscription automatically at the end of each period.
The fan can switch it off at any time. How many fans have it on says a lot about the weeks ahead.
See also: Rebill, Churn
Free pageFree account
A free page charges no subscription price and earns only through single purchases, tips and chat.
See also: Paid page, PPV, Mass message
PPVPay-per-view, PPV message
PPV is content a fan buys one piece at a time, usually as a locked message in chat, on top of the subscription.
According to OnlyFans' annual accounts, most platform revenue does not come from subscriptions. Single purchases are therefore no side business.
See also: Mass message, Vault, UpsellGuide on this: OnlyFans PPV pricing: the ladder, the rhythm, the mistakes
Mass messageMass DM
A mass message goes out to all fans or a selected group at once, often with a PPV offer attached.
Too many of them read like advertising.
See also: PPV, Churn
VaultMedia vault
The vault is an OnlyFans account's media library, holding the uploaded photos and videos used in posts and messages.
Whoever has access to it has access to all the content. That belongs in every conversation about account access.
See also: PPV, Account ownership
TipTips
A tip is a voluntary payment from a fan to a creator that does not buy any particular piece of content.
See also: Custom, Whale
CustomCustom content
A custom is content a creator makes at the request of a single fan and sells to him.
What she does for it and what she does not is her decision alone, even when a chatter takes the request.
See also: Boundaries list, Tip
Subscription bundleBundle
A subscription bundle offers several months of subscription for a total price below the monthly price times the months.
See also: Subscription price, Promotion
PromotionDiscount campaign
A promotion lowers the subscription price for a limited time for new or former subscribers without changing the regular price.
See also: Free trial link, Subscription price
GeoblockingCountry blocking
Geoblocking blocks a page for visitors from chosen countries or regions, for example the one a creator lives in.
It is one layer of anonymity, not complete protection: anyone using a VPN gets around it.
See also: Stage name, DoxxingGuide on this: How to stay anonymous on OnlyFans: alias, separate accounts, geoblocking and what still gives you away
Creator account
A creator account is an OnlyFans account that sells content and receives payouts.
OnlyFans counts creator accounts created, not active ones, in its annual accounts. The figure is on our statistics page.
See also: Fan account, Account ownership
Fan account

Platform feeOnlyFans cut, 20 percent
The platform fee is the part of every fan payment OnlyFans keeps; according to its annual accounts, creators receive 80 percent.
See also: Gross and net, Gross payments
Gross and netGross, Net
Gross is what fans pay; net is what reaches the creator after OnlyFans takes its share.
With an agency this is the most important line in the contract: a share on gross costs noticeably more than the same percentage on net.
See also: Platform fee, Revenue shareGuide on this: How much do OnlyFans agencies take?
Gross paymentsFan payments
Gross payments are the total fans spend on OnlyFans, net of sales taxes and refunds.
OnlyFans reports this total every year in its accounts.

A chargeback is a payment a fan reverses through his bank or card issuer after he has made a purchase.

Fan chat

Chatter
A chatter is a person who writes to a creator's fans in her name and sells content in chat.
